Opening. UKRAINIAN SHERIFFS. HOLDING ON TO HOME by Roman Bondarchuk and Darya Averchenko
Stara Zburivka became known for an unconventional solution born out of the local community’s spirit of self-organisation. At a time when the village lacked a proper law-enforcement presence, village head Viktor Maruniak appointed two local men, Viktor and Volodymyr, to maintain order as “village sheriffs”. Their daily work and life in the village were captured in Roman Bondarchuk’s documentary film Ukrainian Sheriffs. The exhibition brings together the film, previously unpublished video diaries by its creators, and contemporary materials from the Ukraine War Archive. It also features photographs and video footage filmed in Kherson and on the left bank of the Dnipro before Russia’s full-scale invasion.
