Nowisms and talks about the form
How to Improve the Worlds? To Get in Relation With the World!
INGA ŠTEIMANE, curator
From Wednesday, July 13th, the project "Nowisms" will start in Art Station Dubulti. Nine artists will work according to the principle of presence and production. One by one, two by two or more, they will be present in the space and define their ideas. During their presence and production time the young artists will implement their work. At least twice a day the artists will do the text readings or conversations for the live streaming. The presentation of the created works will be held in August 26. All the works will be in an unusual relationship with a traditional exhibition format - they will layer, replace, apply, supplement, empathize, mimicry, love, interpret or continue Thomas Hirshhorn's project "ART=SHELTER" which is on view from April 21st. "Nowisms" is an experimental form that conceptualizes the relation. (How to Improve the World? To get in RELATION with the world! - Thomas Hirschhorn). At the same time, "Nowisms" is a form of hope and despair, that comes from living next to the terrible war in Ukraine. Growing out of "ART=SHELTER" initiated by the artist Thomas Hirschhorn, "Nowisms" have its connection with support for Ukraine and unconditional love for art. The project stands for technical and symbolic relations with the world. Visitors will be able to see how young artists do their work in close distance, as well as implement creative expression in the space as before.
The full name of the project is "Nowisms and talks about the form". The participating artists are Kristiāns Iesalnieks, Andris Ratnieks (dj Plastix), Liene Lintere, ENVIJA, Kintija Avena, Veronika Simoņenkova, Sāra Marija Nudiņa, Elīna Salnāja and Artūrs Bogdanovs. Working under the direction of Thomas Hirschhorn in the building process of "ART=SHELTER", they became a "form" - a group that could cooperate with the precarious structure and accept each other's reality. They will implement their ideas in various materials - poetry, performance, sound, process, painting, design, sculpture, installation, photography, as well as all those "anonymous" materials that can be found here and now. At "Nowisms", they will read Thomas Hirschhorn's text "Tribute to Form" every day and comment on it live in the morning (at 10 a.m.). The text is a manifest for form, and the purpose of "Nowisms" is to re-authorize it or to read it, imagining it as one's own or identifying with the writer. A similar process will take place in the exhibition hall - young artists will create their own form, largely influenced by "ART=SHELTER". The afternoon live broadcast (at 2 p.m.) will be like a diary of what was done, what was understood and what was interesting. Broadcasting from a static camera in the exhibition space will continue throughout the day. The curator's observations of the process will be published on FB. The curator of the project and idea is Inga Šteimane, head of the Art Station Dubulti.
The "Nowisms and talks about the form" takes place at Art Station Dubulti from July 13 to September 25 every day from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Entrance is free. Presentation of the project "Nowisms and talks about the form" will be held in August 26 at 5 p.m. Excursions led by the curator : on July 17 at 4 p.m., August 28 at at 4 p.m., September 3 at at 4 p.m.
The Art Station Dubulti program is supported by the Jūrmala Municipality and the State Culture Capital Fund.

The program for the "Nowisms and talks about form" on August 26th:
With events from ten in the morning until late in the evening, the project of young artists "Nowisms and talks about form" will be opened on August 26th. In it, all new works were created by literally being included in ART=SHELTER initiated by Thomas Hirschhorn. On the opening day, the guests will be able to take a look at the "Nowisms” agenda and newly created works together with the authors. Entrance - free.
“”Nowisms” is a 'relationship project' in the sense that it seeks the potential of the artwork for cooperation in the here and now. At the same time, "Nowisms" can be compared to affirmations practiced in psychotherapy, aimed at influencing, thinking and confirming that there are also good things in life, even if we don't feel like it at the moment. We are currently living next to the terrible war in Ukraine, which has changed the global perspective in just half a year. "Nowisms" artists devote their energy to visions of a better, happier world," says curator Inga Šteimane.
Since July 13th, Kristiāns Iesalnieks, Andris Ratnieks (DJ plastiX), Liene Lintere, Kintija Avena, Veronika Simoņenkova, Elīna Salnāja, Sāra Marija Nudiņa un Artūrs Bogdanovs have put into practice "Nowisms and talks about form". Every day for six weeks, one or several of the artists worked at the Art Station "Dubulti" and created their work in the environment and conceptual structure of the project "ART=SHELTER" initiated by Thomas Hirshhorn. Thomas Hirschhorn is an outstanding contemporary artist who has transformed the art of public space into a new type of monument. His monuments indicate imanent fragility of the world and criticism of exclusiveness of the prescripted identities. Cardboard, tape, foam, polyethylene film and plastic chairs in his art, as well as dialogue, changeability, symbolism, fragility, empathy, hope and a tireless inclusive attitude have become the materials and contexts of the young artists in "Nowisms". In the process of presence and creation of "Nowisms", which ends on August 26th, everyone interested has the opportunity to participate in the morning and afternoon live broadcasts, and in the evening dance at FLASH-MOB DISCO. In the spring, working in the team of Thomas Hirschhorn for “ART=SHELTER”, the artists of "Nowisms" became a kind of "form", or a group, which was able to work creatively in each other's reality, without destroying it, but applying, continuing, supplementing and loving it.
The program for the "Nowisms and talks about form" on August 26th:
10.00 - young artists comment on the most important lesson from Thomas Hirshhorn's text "Tribute to Form"; visitors are invited to participate;
14.00 - presentations of new works (each author ~ 12 min); visitors are invited to participate and talk about art;
16.00 - online meeting with the artist Thomas Hirshhorn; visitors are invited to participate (conversation in English);
17.00 - performance of the poem ‘ound’ by Kristiāns Iesalnieks, congratulations, refreshments and FLASH-MOB DISCO with DJ plastiX.
"Nowisms” has created an expressive poem-performance by Kristiāns Iesalnieks, a series of photo portraits of Ukrainian war refugees by Veronika Simoņenkova, where summer-dressed people cannot be confused with vacationers. FLASH-MOB DISCO by dj plastiX (Andris Ratnieks) has been performed in Dubulti, Sloka and Majori. The choreography of decisions and the evolution of the functions of objects have created Elīna Salnāja's installations, while Kintija Avena documents the surgery of the object, deviating from anthropocentrism towards deep ecology. Liene Lintere, Artūrs Bogdanovs and Sāra Marija Nudiņa created symbolic glorifications of humanism in modern, classical and pop art traditions.
"ART=SHELTER" initiated by Thomas Hirschhorn at Art Station "Dubulti" started on April 21st, and by May 5th, a structure was built, which could be used or added to by every visitor. “"ART=SHELTER is the form, my form, our form opposed to the present Ukranian-War, and furthermore, this form expresses also my belief, my instinct, my intuition toward all wars and war-behaviors: art can and must be a Shelter, art gives and takes Shelter,” says Thomas Hirschhorn. Currently, there are countless inscriptions in Latvian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Georgian, Belarusian, Finnish, Estonian, Kazakh, Polish, Italian, English, Russian, Portuguese and French; there are dedications, insights, slogans, drawings, photographs, pastings, paintings and objects made of foam or wood. The form is supplemented almost every day with sincere “Дякую!" ("Thank you!”) in Ukrainian. We have organised photo days for Ukrainian refugees, we talk with the many visitors, the children come up with the best games themselves. Since July 13th, the creation of the authors of "Nowisms" (<70 live broadcasts https://www.facebook.com/artstationdubulti ) is gradually joining the form. This week, the form was complemented by white and red paper cranes, symbolizing the imprisoned (1,276) and killed (18) people of the Belarusian opposition. Art can be SHELTER.
"Nowisms and talks about form" at Art Station "Dubulti" runs until September 25th every day from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. As does the project “ART=SHELTER" by Thomas Hirschhorn. Excursions led by the curator on August 28th at 4.00 p.m., on September 3rd at 4.00 p.m. in the exhibition hall and online. Entrance is free.
The program of Art Station "Dubulti" takes place with the support of Jurmala City Council and Culture Capital Foundation. The founder of Art Station “Dubulti” is art critic Inga Šteimane.
